[He's managed to pull himself against one of the cabinets, breathing hard. Christmas is beside him, thumping her tail worriedly, while Kepler dashed ahead to fetch his other master. Emmett smiles weakly, clutching at his chest---his face is obviously flushed.]

I've been a little ill, but it's getting progressively worse. Never felt anything like it.

And you called me instead of a hospital?

[ Even has he says that, accusation in his voice, he's tossing his cane aside. Doc's seen him use his little temporary bracing spell before to get around without it, but the waves of energy around his leg seem a little brighter than usual, and he comes over to him unimpeded, kneeling to get him off the floor and to the nearest surface where he can lie him down. ]

[He flinches, a little, but musters up his remaining strength to get himself to the couch. It's a slow effort.]

Memory is sometimes faulty under duress. But you're right, of course.

[He lets out a shaky breath, fumbling for the phone.]

I'll call now.

Be still and let me have a look at you.

[ He could fix something if he knew what was wrong. ]

Tell me what you're feeling.

[Okay. Emmett can trust him, as always.]

Tremors, general weakness...chest pains.

[The last one worries him a lot. It's felt almost like...god, he'd wanted to forget so much. He closes his eyes and grunts.]

[ Gold starts to unbutton his shirt like that might give him a little air. He touches his forehead to check his temperature. ]

I feel like I could do more if I could nail down a cause.

[He lets out a breath, again reaching for the phone.]

It happened suddenly. Doesn't feel natural. That would suggest supernatural...but the only unusual thing I saw was a post stating that the Porter is no longer functioning. But what would that have to do with...

Hold still a moment.

[ He hovers a hand over his chest -- he hasn't ever tried to remove a heart while here but he's not going to do it now. He can, however, use a spell to see inside. ]

[He stays put, but not silent.]

What are you doing?

Looking. You shouldn't feel anything; think of it like an X-ray. All right?

[His mind now returns to the possibilities. What could be wrong with his heart? Was the Porter tied to everything? Their powers, their bodies, the resurrection...but if it was a general issue, shouldn't everyone be ill?

Unless...]

[Gold would see fairly normal innards, and an irregular heartbeat pattern.]

I was shot through once, but that's never posed a problem. It shouldn't have after my body was regenerated.

I see. I'd call it magic if I were keen to categorize everything in this world so readily. But physically it appears there's no reason for this.

[ He lets the spell drop -- or tries. He has to dispel it again, more forcefully, to make it go. ]

Well that's a relief. If it does result in a physical wound...

[He shudders.]

The Porter is the giver of resurrection. Any deaths that happen now will be irreversible.

[ Gold is a master of deflection. ]

I'm not going to let that happen. They're not going to leave it broken for long; it's either keep it working so they can pull more people in and send them away on a whim or give us rights and citizenship.

[Doc sighs, brushing a hand against his.]

I believe you. But if I may ask for a pad and writing utensil? I may have a little less trouble with that than the phone.

Of course.

[ He makes certain Doc is settled before vanishing to fetch what he asks for, as well as some softer pillows for him. He figures here will be better for rest than the bedroom, for now. ]

Do you need anything else? Would some medicine help at all, do you think?

...I don't know, but it's unlikely to be actively harmful.

[He lifts himself with some effort to settle on the pillows, and the dogs of course take the opportunity of a captive human to plant their snouts on his lap and give him the puppy-eyed petting stare. He complies, of course.]

And you're sure you're not feeling the effects?

I...haven't really ever been injured here. I'm not sure what else I should be looking out for.

[ He figures some simple painkillers should be enough, aspirin at least, and maybe just some slow-burn stimulation, if any, so his heartrate doesn't go up, and he disappears into the kitchen to fetch some water. ]

I'll look into further posts online. I'm sure the issue's widespread.

[He reaches around the dogs and does so while Gold is away, wincing when he sees some of what's posted.]

Old injuries reopening in a dramatic fashion...lost limbs, skin falling off...oh.

[He pales. If that hole in his heart reopens, he's not sure he can be saved. When he returns, he's very unhappy.]

I've also seen reports of abilities destabilizing.

Well -- that, I can believe. My spells are working but not quite to the degrees I'm wanting them to.

[ He sets the aspirin and a glass of water on the coffee table where he can reach it. ]

No way to tell if that's the porter gone insane or just an off day for me.

I'm surprised.

[He takes the medicine, taking two tries to choke it down.]

I'd suggest avoiding the videos on the network for now if you're not in the mood for extreme gore.
